The World Film Forum 2025 will present “global animation”, featuring three award-winning animated films from France, Ireland, and Japan. The screenings will take place at Stanley Coulter on three consecutive Tuesday nights in September.

Every film will include a brief pre-screening introduction and a lively post-screening discussion. Free parking will be available at University Street Parking Garage after 5 p.m., and savory refreshments. Doors will open at 6:30 p.m.

Sept. 9. Funan (dir. Denis Do, 2018, history/drama, in French with English subtitles, 84 minutes, NR) tells the story of a family torn apart and sent to different labor camps during the Khmer Rouge revolution in Cambodia. The parents will stop at nothing to be reunited with their son. Presenter: Emma Ben-Hadj, Lecturer of French.

 

Sept. 16. Song of the Sea (dir. Tom Moore, 2014, fantasy, in English, 93 minutes, PG) is the second installment of Tomm Moore’s “Irish Folklore Trilogy.” By following two innocent children’s fantastic journey through rural Ireland, the film reveals the magic of Irish myth and the power of both sorrow and compassion while immersing the audience in breathtaking art and mesmerizing music deeply rooted in Irish culture. Presenter: Hongjian Wang, Associate Professor of Chinese.

 

Sept. 23. A Silent Voice (dir. Naoko Yamada, 2016, romance/drama, in Japanese with English subtitles, 130 minutes, NR). When a schoolboy meets a new classmate with impaired hearing, their encounter sparks bullying that changes both their lives. Based on the acclaimed manga, this film invites us to reflect on how we communicate and connect with others. Presenter: Marina Ishii, Senior Lecturer of Japanese.
