DESCRIPTION:The Purdue University Research Center in Economics (PURCE) invi
tes you to hear from a special guest during our next on-campus economic po
licy luncheon.\n\n \n\n \n\nDr. Carolyn Bourdeaux will examine the problem
of the nation’s rising debt by tracing how the United States moved from
periodic deficits to a sustained and increasingly dangerous structural im
balance in its federal budget. She’ll explore the political\, demographi
c and policy forces that brought us here and the pressures — ranging fro
m interest costs to an aging population — that will continue to drive th
e debt to unsustainable levels in the years ahead. The talk concludes by a
ssessing the economic risks of inaction\, including the potential for a fi
scal checkmate where there are no more good options available to policymak
ers\, and the bipartisan policy solutions that could restore fiscal stabil
ity and strengthen democratic governance.\n\nDr. Bourdeaux is an expert in
national\, state and local public finance and the Executive Director of C
oncord Coalition and Concord Coalition Action Fund\, where she is building
a grassroots movement to advocate for fiscal responsibility\, including w
orking to balance the federal budget and cut the nearly $39 trillion natio
nal debt.\n\nShe served as a Democratic member of Congress from Georgia fr
om 2021-2022 after winning one of the most competitive races in the countr
 y. During her time in Congress\, Dr. Bourdeaux worked with the bipartisan
Problem Solvers Caucus and served as co-chair of the Blue Dog Coalition Ta
sk Force on fiscal responsibility and government reform. She led bipartisa
n efforts to advance solutions to our nation’s fiscal challenges through
responsible budgeting reform and requiring Congress to pay for programs.
She also led policy work on health care\, small business and infrastructur
 e. Dr. Bourdeaux is a contributing columnist to the Atlanta Journal Consti
tution and a Senior Visiting Scholar at the University of Georgia.\n\n \n\
