The Jones Act: Ineffective and Inefficient, but also Unfair

with Russell Hillberry

Professor of Agricultural Economics

Purdue College of Agriculture

11:30 a.m.-12:30 p.m. Eastern

Wednesday, December 11, 2024

Rawls Hall, 3rd Floor Commons

100 S. Grant Street

Purdue’s West Lafayette campus

A century-old federal law known as the Jones Act requires maritime vessels carrying freight between U.S. ports to be U.S.-built, U.S.-owned and U.S.-crewed. Advocates argue the law is justified on tenuous national security grounds.

Hillberry, a PURCE faculty affiliate who has a courtesy appointment with the Daniels School’s economics department, will discuss his research estimating economic costs of the law to the people of Puerto Rico and to the broader U.S. economy. The shortcomings of using international trade restrictions to achieve national security goals are evident in this case, and offer lessons about other efforts to restrict trade on nebulous national security grounds.

Hillberry is a renowned researcher who focus areas include international trade and risk management.

Space is limited for our luncheons, and registration is required. Please register by noon on Friday, December 6. We look forward to seeing you in Rawls Hall!
