Endometriosis—a disease where tissue similar to uterine lining grows in other parts of the body causing pain, infertility and organ dysfunction—is one of the most painful conditions in the world, yet sufferers are often misdiagnosed, dismissed, and disbelieved. “Below The Belt—The Last Health Taboo” tells the personal and inspiring stories of four women urgently searching for answers to mysterious symptoms. From societal taboos and gender bias to misinformed doctors and profit-driven healthcare, the film reveals how millions are effectively silenced and how, by fighting back, they can improve healthcare for everyone.

The screening of the documentary will be followed by a panel discussion featuring Shannon Cohn, the film’s director, as well as Purdue professors Drs. Andrea DeMaria, Department of Public Health, Wendy Kline, College of Liberal Arts, and Kathryn LaRoche, Department of Public Health, who will discuss the urgent issues presented by the film.

This is a free event, presented by Purdue Libraries and School of Information Studies.
