Amongst the many changes that took place in early 20th century Japan was a transformation in gender roles. Central to this was technology, which not only pulled young women into industry, but also allowed them to challenge stereotypes. This talk will cover the story of one particularly intriguing group - female aviators like Mabuchi Choko and Nishizaki Kiku, who not only set records but, in doing so, questioned what the 'proper' role for women in New Japan would be.
