This study focused on science, technology, engineering, and mathematics (STEM) activities led by mathematics education faculty and graduate students twice a week at Freedom School. Freedom School is a national six-week summer literacy program rooted in the Civil Rights movement and addresses social justice issues through a culturally relevant curriculum. Our research goal for the STEM activities was to understand how children use spatio-visual thinking in mapping tasks developed in coordination with the Freedom School’s literacy curriculum (e.g., community) and social justice focus. We present the cases of two students to illustrate how their contexts shaped their interpretations of space within a series of map drawing tasks.
This Lunch and Learn is co-sponsored by the AAARCC and College of Education: Diversity and Global Engagement.
